Franco Moschino was in fact a painter to begin with, having studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti (1971).
While still studying he started working as a freelance fashion illustrator and got a job as a sketcher for Gianni Versace in 1971.
He eventually abandoned fine art when he discovered fashion and tailoring could be his form of expressing himself.
In 1977 he started working for Cadette as a designer and his own label would follow in 1983 and his image became linked to a prevalence of messages such as Stop the Fashion System!; Whos to say what is good taste.
His designs are often then connected to these messages through text or the material itself. Visual puns are also used, although he manages to still make his designs highly sexy and wearable.
Early on he set out to almost make fun of the fashion industry and parody its characters, with a view to ripping up the rule book. But he became a pinnacle of fashion in his own right and succeeded in making fashion fun.
He died in 1994, although he had achieved his aim of breaking the rules while still coming out on top.
