Moschino is an Italian fashion house founded in 1983 by Franco Moschino. Moschino originally aspired to be a painter, studying fine arts at the Accademia delle Belle Arti, but while he was studying he managed to get a job as a sketcher for Gianni Versace in 1971. This career swerve led him to put his artistic talents to work with fabric and tailoring, instead of palette and brush.
Between 1977 and 1982 Moschino designed clothing for Cadette before launching his own label in 1983. It was with the launch of Moschino the label that Moschino the man became famous for his “message laden fashion”. It was his criticism of the fashion industry and for his social awareness campaigns which brought him as much fame and notoriety as his innovative, colourful and sometimes eccentric designs. Moschino loved to parody the fashionistas and the industry itself, creating designs such as a jacket with “waist of money” written across the waist band or a shirt with “for fashion victims only” scrawled across it. It was with these parodies that Moschino found himself at the very top of the industry he was poking fun at.
Moschino s puns also extended to one of his fragrances Cheap and Chic, a women s fragrance, while he has also created perfumes for men that include Friends and Uomo Moschino.
