Jil Sander was born Heidemarie Jiline Sander in Hamburg in 1943 and has made her name as a minimalist fashion designer. Her trademark look was that of a monochromatic well cut trouser suit, form fitting blouse and slimline coat. The look has been described as austere, but contemporary and was always based on understated elegance using the finest materials.
Sander tended to use materials in plain grey, black, blue or white and enjoyed a cult following for her easily co-ordinated collections.
Sander has earned a number of nicknames over the years including the Queen of Less, Master of Minimalism, Queen of Cashmere and The Fashion Reductionist.
Jil created her first perfume in 1978 and has gone on to enjoy great fortune from her successive range of fragrances, including, for men, Sander for Men, Style Men and Sun for Men
