Jean Patou was a French designer born in 1880 in Normandy. He capitalised on women s newly gained liberty in the 1920s by creating exciting new fashions, eradicating the flapper look and introducing sportswear for women. He is also given credit for the twin-set, monograms and the first knitted bathing suits.
In1925 he launched a range of perfumes, one for brunettes, Amour Amour; Que Sais-je for blondes and Adieu Sagesse for redheads. This was jus the start of his perfume empire. His quest for elegance and luxury was epitomised when just after the crash in 1929, he created a perfume marketed as “the world s most expensive perfume”. The perfume “Joy” was said to use a concentration of 10600 flowers and 28 dozen roses.
In recent times it has been Patou s great nephew, Jean de Mouy, running the family business. The current line of Patou fragrances available include the peerless Joy, as well as his other perfumes, Enjoy; 1000; Patou Forever, Sira Des Indes and Sublime.
